WHO Prescribing Guidance

Indications · Administration · Dosage · Precautions

Reference information summarised from WHO prescribing guidance. Expand each item below — clinical use must always follow the locally approved product insert.

🎯Indications▾
● Fitting of hard (rigid gas-permeable) contact lenses [1][2][3] ● Disclosing corneal injury and staining of the anterior segment of the eye [2] ● Applanational tonometry (measurement of intraocular pressure) [2][3] ● Suitable for children, adults and the elderly when applied by a doctor or eye-care professional [3]
💧Administration▾
● The doctor or eye specialist applies the strip; remove any soft contact lenses before application [3] ● Take the strip out of the envelope holding the handle end; do not touch the dye-impregnated tip [3] ● Moisten the impregnated tip with one or two drops of sterile irrigating or saline solution (sterile eyewash, water or saline) before application to ensure full fluorescence and patient comfort [1][2][3] ● Touch or gently stroke the moistened tip across the conjunctiva or fornix as required; ask the patient to blink several times to spread the dye evenly [1][2][3] ● Each strip is for single use only — discard after use; excess fluorescein may be rinsed away with sterile eyewash [3]
⚖️Dosage▾
● Do not use if the patient is allergic to fluorescein or to any component of the strip [3] ● Do not use with soft contact lenses in place — remove them before application and do not re-insert until the dye has completely worn off [3] ● For external ophthalmic use only; do not inject [1][3] ● Do not use if the strip pouch has been damaged or previously opened — the contents may no longer be sterile [1][2][3] ● Do not touch the dye-impregnated tip when handling the strip [3] ● Vision may be blurred after application; this clears within a few minutes — wait until vision is clear before driving or using machines [3] ● Very rare side effects: allergic reactions with redness and irritation of the eye, swelling around the eye, severe allergic reaction with difficulty in breathing and symptoms of shock, or an itchy skin rash with raised red blotches — seek immediate medical attention if these occur [3] ● Storage: store at 10–30 °C (or below 30 °C; do not store above 25 °C per some labels); do not freeze; keep in the original package to protect from light [1][2][3] ● Once opened, use the strip immediately and discard it after use; keep out of the reach and sight of children [3] For full prescribing information, refer to the approved product label / package leaflet of the product concerned [1][2][3].
⚠️Precautions & Warnings▾
