WHO Prescribing Guidance

Indications · Administration · Dosage · Precautions

Reference information summarised from WHO prescribing guidance. Expand each item below — clinical use must always follow the locally approved product insert.

🎯Indications▾
Sterile parenteral tetracycline antibiotic for intravenous infusion. Used for severe respiratory tract, skin/soft-tissue and systemic infections when oral administration is not feasible, and as a WHO-recommended adjunct (with IV artesunate) in severe malaria.
💧Administration▾
For intravenous infusion only. Must be reconstituted then further diluted after reconstitution before administration. Infuse slowly (typically over 1–4 hours); avoid rapid IV push. Switch to oral doxycycline as soon as the patient tolerates oral therapy.
⚖️Dosage▾
Adults: 200 mg IV on day 1 (single or 100 mg 12-hourly), then 100–200 mg daily depending on severity. Severe malaria (adjunct): 100 mg IV 12-hourly alongside IV artesunate until oral therapy is possible, then complete course orally.
⚠️Precautions & Warnings▾
Same class cautions as oral doxycycline: photosensitivity, oesophagitis; contraindicated in pregnancy and children under 8. IV form may cause phlebitis — ensure adequate dilution and slow infusion. Adjust in severe hepatic impairment. Avoid concurrent isotretinoin. Use sterile technique and reconstitute per label.
