🎯Indications▾

Broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic. Indicated for respiratory tract infections (incl. atypical pathogens), skin and soft-tissue infections, acne, chlamydial infections, rickettsioses, Lyme disease, and malaria chemoprophylaxis. Per WHO consolidated guidelines on drug-resistant tuberculosis, doxycycline is a Group A fluoroquinolone-line adjunct; also WHO-recommended adjunctive antimalarial (with artesunate) for severe malaria.

💧Administration▾

Oral, with a full glass of water, remaining upright ≥30 minutes to reduce oesophagitis risk. Take with food/milk if GI upset. Avoid antacids, calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc within 2 hours (chelation reduces absorption).

⚖️Dosage▾

Adults: 200 mg on day 1 (single or 100 mg 12-hourly), then 100 mg once or twice daily. Malaria prophylaxis: 100 mg daily, starting 1–2 days before exposure, continued 4 weeks after leaving the endemic area. Not for children under 8 years.

⚠️Precautions & Warnings▾

Tetracycline class: photosensitivity (advise sun protection), oesophageal irritation/ulceration. Contraindicated in pregnancy (tooth discoloration, fetal growth retardation) and children under 8. Use with caution in severe hepatic impairment. Avoid concurrent isotretinoin (risk of benign intracranial hypertension). Complete the full course to limit resistance.
