🎯Indications▾

Severe allergic and inflammatory disorders, asthma exacerbations, autoimmune disease, croup, and adjunctive treatment of bacterial meningitis and preterm lung maturation (WHO essential medicine uses).

💧Administration▾

Oral with food, or intravenous/intramuscular injection. Do not stop systemic steroids abruptly after prolonged use — taper the dose.

⚖️Dosage▾

Dexamethasone adults 0.5–2 mg daily for general anti-inflammatory use; croup 0.15–0.6 mg/kg single dose; bacterial meningitis adjunct 0.15 mg/kg every 6 h for 2–4 days. Prednisolone adults 5–60 mg daily depending on indication. Children dexamethasone 0.15–0.3 mg/kg.

⚠️Precautions & Warnings▾

Minimise duration and dose. Monitor for hyperglycaemia, hypertension, infection masking, GI ulceration and electrolyte disturbance; longer courses require bone protection and controlled withdrawal. Caution in diabetes, peptic ulcer and active infection.
