Venodilation causes blood to pool in the periphery, reducing venous return and lowering left ventricular end-diastolic pressure and pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (preload). Arterial dilation reduces peripheral vascular resistance, systolic arterial pressure, and mean arterial pressure (afterload). Coronary dilation increases coronary perfusion. The overall effect is a reduction in myocardial oxygen consumption and an increase in oxygen supply, thereby relieving angina pectoris.
